KATHY'S HOME & GARDEN TIPS - 2014 WEST NILE VIRUS

We are getting into that time of year for mosquitoes to breed and cause irritation to many individuals. But more worrisome is West Nile Virus. This virus can be deadly to the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system. With all the rain we have had in the Chicago area this month, conditions are ripe for mosquito growth. There have been mosquitoes testing positive in the area already this year.

The best way to avoid the virus is to not get bitten in the first place. Early morning and evening are the worst time to be outside. If you do have to be out wear light colored clothing with long sleeves, pants and socks. Not too comfortable in hot weather but necessary. Use insect repellants that contain DEET. Reapply often.

Keep mosquitoes away by reducing the prime areas for breeding. Long standing water is ideal mosquito reproduction. Make sure the water in birdbaths and kiddie pools is changed frequently. Keep grass and bushes well trimmed. Overgrown lawn and shrubs are havens for mosquito growth. Keep drains clear and open. Don’t let water pool under houseplants or puddle under porches.

You can get more information by going to www.idph.state.il.us. There is also a MOSQUITO HOTLINE @ 1-800-942-2555. Here you can report neglected pools, long standing water or areas with excessive mosquito populations.
