It’s that time of year that we are all out grilling. Anytime you are dealing with an open flame there are precautions you need to take.

It’s good to always keep the grill clean and relatively free of grease buildup. Never pour lighter fluid on hot coals, and use as little as possible. It will lessen the danger of a flame up and food will taste better too. Light your gas grill as soon as you turn the gas on, gas buildup can flame up.

Always grill in a well-ventilated area. Burning coals produce deadly carbon monoxide. Make sure grill is on a level solid surface. Be careful of any loose clothing and hair. Grills produce high heat and clothing and hair can ignite.

Don’t drink excessively while grilling. It can be as dangerous as driving drunk. Stay close to the grill and monitor at all times. Don’t do double duty. Get help to do other chores so you can keep an eye on the grill.

If you have a gas grill be careful with the propane canisters. Propane is highly flammable and is stored at high pressure. Avoid punctures or overheating.

Make sure the grill is out before leaving the area. Charcoal grills will put themselves out if you remove the oxygen. Firmly cover and close all vents. With a little care grilling can be safe and fun.
