TECHNOLOGY TIPS - IS THERE A KIT CAR IN YOUR FUTURE

If you are a David Hasselhoff fan, you'll understand the reference.

Google has been a player in the self-driving vehicles game since 2011 when these vehicles became legal in Nevada.  With close to 700,000 miles already logged - primarily on the highway - there have been few accidents and none at the fault of the autonomous car.

With these cars now legal in California, Florida and Michigan, Google has been test driving close to home on the city streets of Mountain View. City driving is so much more complex than that of highways and the technology leader is improving its software to account for the many complexities.  Where highway driving would have other vehicles and possible animals on the road, on a busy city street there are literally hundreds of moving objects like pedestrians, buses, crossing guards or even a cyclist to name a few.

The car has a high quality laser radar system and range finder so that it can create a 3D map of its current location. Not only does it see what is ahead but also what is behind.  This is especially helpful with poor cyclists on the road. The vehicle also knows how to navigate through construction zones.

The ultimate goal for Google is to create a vehicle that needs no human intervention.
