KATHY'S HOME & GARDEN TIPS - GARDEN HINTS TO USE THIS SPRING

I’m going to give you a few hints to get you started in the garden this spring. First thing, make sure your tools are clean and repaired. Use steel wool on the metal parts to remove rust and old dirt. Wash wooden handles with mild soap and rub with a little lemon oil when dry to preserve the wood.

Clean clay pots with mixture of equal parts vinegar, rubbing alcohol and water. Put into a spray bottle and spray all surfaces. Scrub with a plastic brush, rinse and let dry before using. A great use for clay pots, keep garden twine available and contained. Place the roll of twine in an upside down pot and feed the string through the drain hole. Use upside down pots to cover and protect young plants from freezing during late season frost.

Hopefully you’ve already started the lawnmower to make sure it’s working. If not get in line at the repair shop! Make sure your blades are nice and sharp, much better for the grass. We’ve switched over to a cordless electric mower as opposed to a gas one. There is much less maintenance and it’s better for the environment.

Here is another use for a long handle garden implement. Put the tool on the ground and lay a tape measure along the handle. Make a mark every 6 inches. This comes in handy when placing plants for planting.

Spray your trimmer string with vegetable oil to make feeding it out smooth and easy. Wear an apron with pockets to hold tools and other things like string, twist ties and scissors. Carry blank cards and a pen if you need to make a note.
