TECHNOLOGY TIPS – TWITTER ALERTS FOR EMERGENCIES

So you’ve probably heard of Twitter and just this past week, they’ve introduced a new emergency notification service called Twitter Alerts.  Essentially, it’s part of an emergency broadcasting system that gets important information during emergency situations including natural disasters.

As a Twitter user, you are able to sign up for the program.  Your smart phone has to have Twitter 5.10 for iPhone or Twitter 4.1.6 for Android. The service will deliver SMS notification updates. There are approximately 100 organizations and governmental bodies in the United States, Japan and Korea.  The goal is to ultimately expand the service worldwide.

The US organizations in the service will include the Department of Homeland Security, the American Red Cross, US Bureau of Land Management, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and multiple regions of FEMA. For those users who do not want to sign up for the service, you can still get Emergency Broadcast System texts to your phone.
