KATHY’S HOME & GARDEN TIPS – FLOWERS THAT WORK WELL IN THE YARD ALL YEAR
Perennials

Purple coneflower- This plant is hardy and unfussy with large flowers that bloom throughout the year. They draw butterflies and also last well as cut flowers. After several years you can divide the plants to make more.

Brown eyed Susan- this perennial favorite mixes in well in a border with other flowers. The blooms are bright yellow and orange and form showy clumps as hardy as their wildflower ancestors. They are also good cut flowers.

Daylilies- these bloom in full sun to partial shade, so they work well in many different landscapes. They have many blooms and are hardy and fuss free.

Evergreen Candytufts- has low growing clumps of white flowers that appear in spring and continue into the fall. The shiny, dark green leaves remain all year long.

Profusion Zinnias- these do great in hot weather and bloom well into the fall.  Profusion White, Orange and Cherry varieties have daisy like flowers and have won various awards. Double Profusions have fluffy pompom blooms. They like full sun and regular water.

Annuals

We need to plant annuals every year as the name says. There are so many to choose that I will only mention a few here.

Marigolds are hardy and come in shades including yellow and orange. They have a strong smell and repel many pests.

Petunias come in many shades, their vine like habit make them a great choice for hanging baskets.

Impatiens come in many varieties from a lower growing one with small round green leaves to a larger one with spiky dark green leaves. They all have many colored blooms and do well in shady areas.

Another shady favorite are begonias. These come in shades from white to pink and red. The foliage is waxy and ranges from green to purplish.

All these varieties are widely available in the Chicago area at Garden Centers and Home Improvement Stores.

Happy Gardening!
