TECHNOLOGY TIPS – APPLE LOOKS TO THE FUTURE, BORROWING FROM THE PAST

While Android continues to dominate the top spot in the world of smartphones, raking in a whopping 68.8% of the market for 2012 according to the research firm IDC, Apple has its eye on the future and is aiming to make something old, new again.

Enter the wristwatch turned smartwatch. A piece of 20th century technology, often left behind with the advent of the cellphone, the wristwatch is getting a 21st century upgrade. What exactly the functions will be, how extensive the capabilities, and whether it will require a companion device, are all just speculation at this point, but reliable sources are pointing to development already far along:

Wall Street Journal: Apple is currently "experimenting with designs for a watch-like device that would perform some functions of a smartphone."

New York Times: The watch's display is apparently made with curved glass, to naturally wrap around the wrist.

Bloomberg: There are no immediate plans to release the iWatch, though Apple supposedly has 100 product designers working on it and is past the point of prototyping.

iMore: Based on sources in Apple, the project "sounds like it's a go."

Based on the loyal fan-base for Apple products and the market's quick response to adapt to consumers' desires for faster, easier, less bulky technology, after smartwatches launch the idea of carrying a phone in a pocket may seem so old-fashioned and inconvenient.
