CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS – PORTAGE PARK, OLD TOWN, LINCOLN PARK, LOOP, EVANSTON

PORTAGE PARK

The National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago has moved to a new location at 4041 N. Milwaukee Avenue.  As Veterans Day approaches next Monday, the museum presents a joint exhibition, Welcome Home, which will be free and open to the public from 1-5pm.  You can hear veterans, Dr. Charles Smith and Ash Kyrie, discuss "the disconnect between civilians and the war being conducted in their name."

OLD TOWN

Please welcome Arami Go, everything you love about the West Town's Arami, shrunken down to a fun-size quick-serve spot, slated to open next week in Streeterville. You'll head here, and straight to the bento counter. You'll create your own bento box with grilled beef strip loin, salmon or spicy tuna, plus house-pickled vegetables and rice (they have three kinds). If you want to transform your bento box into a hand roll, just ask for a nori wrap and make it yourself.

LINCOLN PARK

Introducing Barbour, a pop-up shop in Lincoln Park now open to outfit you for your starring role in that seasonal epic known as Chicago Winter. See, this iconic English brand-favored by British royal families on horseback and insouciant American actors on motorcycles-also happens to be keenly adept at making hearty outerwear to protect you from gale-force winds on "L" platforms in January. It's the Steve McQueen collection in the front of the shop that will probably interest you year-round.

LOOP

Now in its fourth year the Chicago Loop Alliance is once again celebrating the "wonders of the Loop" known as Winter WonderLoop.  The Winter WonderLoop holiday guide will showcase over 100 special offers and events, featuring the best of downtown's restaurants, retailers, cultural institutions and more.  Lightscape will be installed again this year along State Street.  The dates for Winter WonderLoop are November 19 through December 31.

EVANSTON

Welcome to Found, a well-appointed salon of good food and strong cocktails in Evanston, opening Tuesday. Start at the bar-a Pink Lady for your date, something pumpkin-and-rye-ish for you (i.e., Pederson's Spicy Pumpkin). The rest of the night unfolds over bacon-and-leek flatbreads, lamb meatballs served with pistachio chimichurri, and pumpkin gelato sundaes. It looks like the kind of place that served the intelligentsia well in days gone by. By which we mean they have plenty of gin and beer.
