CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS - NORWOOD PARK, LAKEVIEW, SOUTH LOOP, OLD TOWN, NAPERVILLE

NORWOOD PARK

Chicago Career Tech is a no cost job re-training initiative that strives to close the workforce skills gap. To date, 950 unemployed Chicagoans and more than 150 businesses and nonprofit organizations have participated in the program. Chicago Career Tech offers two types of programs - corporate-based Pathways to Employment and education-based Career Training.  The application deadline is February 14.

LAKEVIEW

You may have heard of this company, Enron.  Now there's a play that takes on this infamous national scandal.  Crafted as sprawling tragedy mixed with savage comedy, Enron follows a group of ambitious men and women through the breathtaking rush of greed and fraud that led to a legendary financial collapse. The play is presented by Timeline Theatre Company and has won international critical acclaim.

SOUTH LOOP

Optimo Hats, the only hatmaker Johnny Depp trusts to help get his scalp into character, is now open. Optimo's been perfectly blocking, sewing and hand-finishing felt masterpieces for 16 years down in Beverly. You'll be measured. You'll select your finishes. You'll practice alluring tilts. And about three weeks later, you'll be swaggering down Michigan Avenue with a renewed sense of confidence now that you look a bit more like John Dillinger.

OLD TOWN

The weather is set to get a little chilly in the near future but if you can beat the cold, take a walking tour through Old Town.  While on the tour, you'll visit the Chicago History Museum founded by the Chicago Historical Society. The Chicago Historical Society was founded in 1856, and the recently renovated museum contains a wealth of information and fascinating exhibits on such things as Chicago's early settlers, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Democratic Convention (and riots) of 1968 and Abraham Lincoln's presidency.

NAPERVILLE

Naperville School District 203 had its last public forum on Wednesday evening to discuss the boundary map for the district.  Superintendent Dan Bridges said, "At this point, I feel like the committee has addressed the criterion for the map based on public feedback. Those areas consist of balancing enrollment for current and future programs, making efficient use of our buildings, making sure the boundary changes are ones that least impact the district, and maintaining neighborhoods while allowing the walkers to continue walking."  The final map has not yet been completed but the proposed plan would make some changes.
