CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS – PORTAGE PARK, LAKEVIEW, LINCOLN SQUARE, WEST LOOP, NAPERVILLE
PORTAGE PARK
Chicago is home to one of the biggest Polish
American communities in America. Earlier this month during the
conversations about ward re-districting, Robert Groszek, an attorney, said, "We
want to go to one Aldermanic office to take care of the needs of our
community." Alderman Dick Mell sounded hopeful, "We're going to try to do the
best we can. But the Polish community has moved (over time). Maybe (creating a
Polish ward) is a possibility. We'll try."
LAKEVIEW
Don't fight the crowds at all those department stores and
malls! Be up close and personal with the
jolly old elf himself at Flourish Studios! He'll have time to laugh and talk with you
and your little ones on Saturday, December 3rd, from 10:30am to
3:00pm. This day includes Holiday Storytime
with Ms. Debra followed by Santa ho, ho, hoing his way into the gallery. Santa
will stay until the very last child has been spoken to.
LINCOLN SQUARE
The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce is holding a new holiday
family event at Martyrs', 3855 N. Lincoln Ave., Jingle Bell Breakfast. Martyr's will be serving a breakfast buffet
and will have plenty of activities for the kids with holiday entertainment and
crafts. PLUS, the kids can meet with Santa and have their picture taken with
him. Tickets are $10 per person and seating is limited to 150 so get your
tickets early.
WEST LOOP
Welcome to Slurping Turtle, a new mecca of
noodles and cocktails, now open. Enjoy a massive bowl of egg noodles swimming
in sea-salt broth and teeming with organic chicken and Asian veggies. This is
from the chef behind Takashi in Bucktown. The room is bright and airy. Perch on
the mezzanine level with your version of ScarJo and sip a Lost in Translation
(Japanese whiskey, sweet vermouth and ginger syrup), then share bigeye tuna
sashimi and split the anmitsu, it's sort of a Japanese ice cream sundae.
NAPERVILLE
Katie Reis had the idea to write a book and at the ripe old
age of 17, she is a published
author. "Watching Over Me,"
landed on Amazon.com on July 23 and is also found in her high school's library.
Reis says of the main character Zoe, "It becomes a story about her trials with
her grandma and getting to understand her and loving her, despite the fact that
she is rough on her choices."
