TECHNOLOGY TIPS – WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW BEFORE INVESTING IN A VIDEO CARD

When purchasing a computer, there are so many accessories mentioned it's pretty challenging to keep up with all the "bits and pieces."  If you work with sales associate, you'll be asked what you plan to do with the computer to help you determine the type of video card you will require.

So what exactly is a video card? It's the component responsible for the images you see on your computer screen. The video card is an essential element especially for gamers, graphic artists and everyday website surfing. So before getting a basic video card or a top of the line one, here are some things to know when shopping for one.

A video card can be broken down into four basic criteria - price, speed, resolution, and card slot type.

You may hear people talk about video cards and graphics cards. Video cards are more useful to gamers. Video games have advanced to the point where resolution is the key element but some gaming worlds are so advanced that faster play is more important.  Graphics cards are desired more by graphic artists or where attention to detail is essential, especially for the casual user who surfs the Web.

The type of video card depends on the type of connection you have. It can already be installed to your preference in a new computer. Just so you know, there are three main connection types - AGP, PCI-E or VGA cable.

Like all components the price for video cards can range from moderately to quite expensive. Depending on your needs cheaper doesn't necessarily mean inferior quality, just fewer bells and whistles. If you aren't into gaming or computer design, then you can get an average priced one.
