LOOP
Filini, the modern Italian restaurant opened this week along
with the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel. Following in the footsteps of the master
director, the sight is one to behold.
With attention to detail you notice the homages to local architecture-a
brick wall mimicking the skyline and floor mosaics modeled after Chicago's tree
grates. The lobby is a well-cushioned room across from the lounge with couches
everywhere and a 50-foot-long gas fireplace, flickering ever so softly.
PORTAGE PARK
The Eighth Annual Chicago Filipino American Film Festival
starts Friday night with refreshments. Meet special guests Bessie Badilla and
Lyca Benitez-Brown (DANCE OF MY LIFE) and other filmmakers whose works will be
featured at CFAFF 2011. Tickets are available at the Portage Theater Box Office
from Friday, November 4.
LAKEVIEW
Eric Aubriot, the two-times James Beard nominee, is back.
He's quietly opened Revolver, which feels a lot like
a neighborhood family spot, probably because it used to be Xippo. It's got the
same décor - jet-black furniture, airplane-propeller fans - but way different
food (pâté, seaweed salad). You know what to do.
GOLD COAST
TR Napa Valley, which is basically
a California Wine Country brochure come to life, is open in the Gold Coast. It's
basically a place you and, oh, approximately one other person (maybe three, if
you're willing to get really close) can sneak in for a glass, purchase a bottle
for the local BYOB. Or for 50 bucks, join their wine club, entitling you to
wine discounts and concierge services in Napa.
EVANSTON
Governor Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced
$1 billion in funding
for improvements to the CTA's Red and Purple lines -- including new
rail ties for the Purple Line through Evanston. The updates to the El should
eliminate slow zones that now affect about a quarter of the route. Officials
say the new project will create 2,700 jobs.
