TECHNOLOGY TIPS – HOW TO BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER

Have you ever had your computer crash or heard of someone else's computer crashing?  It's one of those things that we all think won't happen to us but if or when it does, it can really make your computing life a great deal more challenging.

There are multiple reasons for a computer hard drive to crash. The main thing is to keep it from happening to you. If you own or use a computer for either personal or professional reaons, you need to back up your computer files. It's a good practice and not difficult at all to put a backup system in place. There are two ways of backing up computer files: online or software programs.

Backup Software Programs

If you've heard of Norton, you probably know about their antivirus software. They also make backup software for your computer called Norton Ghost. The software allows you to back up your entire hard drive or specific folders. You can schedule regular backups too so it's easier to maintain and don't have to worry about operator error.

Norton also offers Norton Save & Restore, similar to Norton Ghost without the extra features. You can schedule your backup operations and forget about it. Either way, should your system decide to crash, you won't lose your data.

Online Backup Programs

Online backup provides a secure serve through the web where your data is sent. There are both free and paid services. Depending on the amount of data you are backing up, the free plan may work for you. Most business users will opt for a paid service offering unlimited data backup for a low monthly fee.

Here are some of the more popular online backup programs:

  • Mozy - free up to 2GB; $5.99 per month up to 50GB and $9.99 per month for 125GB
  • Carbonite - yearly subscription starting at $59 for unlimited data
  • SOS Online Backup - 100GB for $9.95 per month

Each program has unique offers with the advantage of accessibility online.

Regardless of your choice, backing up your important files will give you peace of mind in the event of a system crash.
