TECHNOLOGY TIPS – CLEANING YOUR LAPTOP OR PC EXTERIOR

So yeah, dusting and I do not like each other but it's a necessary evil in my world.  The same holds true for your computer. With the amount of time spent on computers these days, it can get pretty dirty! Here are some tips for cleaning the exterior of your laptop or PC.

Before you get started, you need to remember that even though computers work hard for you they are very delicate.  Spraying Windex on your screen will create bigger problems. Take the soft approach.

Cleaning the Screen

Regardless of it being a laptop or PC, the screen will get dirty. You may touch it or possibly sneezed on it (deadlines still exist no matter how you are feeling). If left alone over time, you will get a build-up on your computer and it needs to be cleaned off.

To see the dirt on your computer, turn it off and stare at the blank screen. Grab a lint-free cloth, which you can find at any computer store. Gently apply even pressure as you wipe dirt and dust off of the screen. Don't press too hard because you could damage the components in the screen - more so with a newer screen or laptop, older monitors are sturdier. Commercial cleaners that are approved is best and won't leave a film.

Cleaning the Keyboard

The one place most of us don't think about is the keyboard. Over time, the keyboard can gather dust, lint, dirt, food and other small particles which get wedged between keys. With the keys so close together, it's extremely difficult to clean between them without popping the keys off.

The best method is to use a can of compressed air. Start at one end of the keyboard and direct the spray towards the other to move all the dirt out in one direction. Since you've already got it available, use some screen cleaner to wipe skin oils from the keyboard keys. Finally, finish off by using a computer brush or computer vacuum to remove any other bits of debris not picked up.

As a habit, perform this maintenance on a monthly basis. It will keep your keys from getting sticky or scratching on the screen to remove dirt. The added bonus is that germs will not linger.
