KATHY’S HOME & GAREN TIPS – RAINY WEATHER

With all the rain we’ve been having around Chicago lately, I know it’s been hard to get lawn work accomplished. If you can’t get out to cut the grass because of weather and it gets too long, just cut it two times. You only have to make sure you don’t cut more than a third of the length of the grass at a time. You can wait till next month to fertilize. With all this rain the last thing you want is the grass growing anymore.

One more reminder to check everywhere for standing water to prevent mosquito eggs from hatching and growing into disease carrying, biting mosquitoes. West Nile Mosquitoes have been discovered nearby. Always wear insect repellant when you go outside, especially in the evening.

Keep harvesting your vegetables and try to keep the weeds down. I know it’s near impossible with all this rain, but try. It’s also a good time to sow lettuces and spinach. They thrive in the cooler weather we’ll be getting soon. You can harvest till the first frost.
