CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS – PORTAGE PARK, LAKE VIEW, LOOP, LINCOLN SQUARE, EVANSTON
Cathy Mallers PhotoAs we start getting into cooler weather and spending more time indoors, I wanted to focus on some great theatre options.

PORTAGE PARK

This Saturday, September 18, is Fan Appreciation Day at the Portage Park Theater.  Come out for what's being touted as Spooktacular Saturday.  The lineup of movies has some great classics including The Phantom Planet, King Kong vs. Godzilla, The House of Dracula, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (the original), Darkman, and The Manster.  Come dressed as one of the movie monsters to be eligible to win dinner for two at the end of the fourth movie.  Doors open at 11 am.

LAKEVIEW

Attention all singing actors/actresses.  Bailiwick Chicago just announced auditions for the musicals PASSING STRANGE and VIOLET.  You have two different days to choose, either Monday, October 4 or Tuesday, October 5.  Auditions are being held from 6-10 pm both days.  You can view character breakdowns on the Bailiwick Chicago site or send an email to 2011casting@bailiwickchicago.com with your headshot and resume for an appointment.  Break a leg!

LOOP

Bollywood has become a popular dance form in the US especially since its introduction on shows such as So You Think You Can Dance.  The Merchants of Bollywood will be performing at the Auditorium Theatre on October 1 and 2.  This show is sure to sell out so get your tickets early.  This is an original performance from Mumbai, India, featuring 50 performers, lavish costumes and spectacular jewelry.

LINCOLN SQUARE

The Old Town School of Folk Music has a never-ending list of performances and one I'm especially fond of is the World Music Wednesdays.  This series of artists showcases music from around the world including acts like Deolinda, a Portuguese fado band, and Adam del Monte, an award-winning guitarist and composer that is equally accomplished in both classical and flamenco guitar.

EVANSTON

The North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie has brought back The Hundred Dresses based on the childrens' classic of the same name by Eleanor Estes.  While the show doesn't open until November, it is a family favorite.  There are special rates for schools as well as scout troops.  Be sure to get your tickets early since this show sold out early last year.
