CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS – PORTAGE PARK, LOOP, LINCOLN PARK, OLD TOWN, NAPERVILLE

Cathy Mallers PhotoPORTAGE PARK

This Thursday don't miss the 11th annual farmer's market sponsored by Wright College and Eli's Cheesecake Company.  The market is held every Thursday through October 28.  Join the market early and get a free continental breakfast between 7-9am.  A free lecture at 1pm from Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences.

LINCOLN PARK

The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year.  Starting this Thursday, July 1, admission is free to all who attend.  With such exhibits like the Monarch Butterfly and Guided Nature Walks, it's a great way to spend time with the family.  You can also learn valuable information about creating a greener lifestyle.

LOOP

The Chicago Loop Alliance's Pop-Up Art Loop Initiative holds its opening receptions each first Thursdays during their Gallery Walk.  This Thursday, July 1, a new installation by local artists Angie Garbot and Kate Friedman will be on display through August 23.

The Gallery is open Mondays - Saturdays from 11:30am - 5:30pm.  The event is being sponsored by SPEX & Chicago Loop Alliance.

OLD TOWN

Do you like Starbucks?  If so, then you'll be excited to hear that Starbucks is now competing with McDonald's.  Starting July 1 Wi-Fi will be free to all customers.  Part of the effort is to gain back those customers Starbucks feels it has lost due to cost for Wi-Fi connectivity.  Starbucks had previously offered two hours of free access each day to registered customers.  Since that offering the chain has reported increased customers.

NAPERVILLE

Naperville's RibFest is a fun and exciting event.  There is so much to do with music, rides, ribs and fireworks.  What most attendees forget is that this is actually a fundraiser.  The purpose of the event is to raise money for the elimination of domestic violence and child abuse.  This year in addition to the funds raised, LifeSource will have their own booth conducting a bone marrow registry drive.  While the event is extremely fun and the ribs tasty, this is a great opportunity for the community to possibly save a life.
