CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS - NORWOOD PARK, SOUTH LOOP, RIVER NORTH, LAKEVIEW, NAPERVILLE
This week I wanted to showcase some great Irish pubs in the area. It's getting to be summertime and having a "pint" with friends is always so enjoyable.
NORWOOD PARK
Chief O'Neill's Pub & Restaurant is known as one of the best in the city of Chicago. Not only is it a great place to go and have food with family or friends, it's one of the more traditional pubs you'll find in the neighborhood. Known for one of the best shepard's pie, a warm and friend staff, and simply an amazing place to visit to learn about Irish culture. They have an extremly large outdoor garden for the summer months, so head out to this gem.
SOUTH LOOP
Located in the heart of Printer's Row, Kasey's Tavern is one for the locals. They always seem to have a special going, even on the weekends which is so unusual for Chicago's more tourist locations. They have a quality beer selection, extremely friendly staff and an owner who likes to be there. They will definitely go the extra mile for you, "(for a mere two bucks) they will order up Hackney's, have it delivered, and plate it up for you."
RIVER NORTH
Celtic Crossing is one of my personal favorites. It is an Irish pub. The bartenders there will have a chat with you and then about 20 minutes later you'll hear John singing an Irish tune - he's got a couple CD's out and well worth the listen. This pub is known as the best Guiness pour in the entire city of Chicago (according to Yelp). For me, I like the laid back atmosphere, the music on Sunday nights and true charm of a pub that's focused on being a pub and not a sports bar.
LAKEVIEW
There are a lot of "Irish" pubs in the Lakeview area. There are few who actually have the appeal to Irish in this part of the city. Johnny O'Hagan's is one of those pubs where you can go and sit down at the bar by yourself. Eventually you'll see one or two people come in, grab a pint and then start up a conversation with you. It has a very traditional feel to it with a huge fireplace in the back to warm up on the colder evenings in Chicago. It's a great Irish pub to visit, especially before or after a Cubs game.
NAPERVILLE
Quigley's Irish Pub is a more unique experience for someone trying to get a more traditional experience. This particular pub is definitely a summer afternoon destination. Of particular note is the fact that you can bring your dog with you out onto the patio and have a nice afternoon while enjoying a pint. Their menu has some non-traditional items which are quite tasty - try the smoked salmon sandwich. They're off the beaten path which also makes it a local's favorite.
