CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS – PORTAGE PARK, LAKEVIEW, SOUTH LOOP, LINCOLN SQUARE, EVANSTON
PORTAGE PARK
Help the local community this weekend by participating in the annual Earth Day at Portage Park. Get your green on this Saturday as the Friends of Portage Park are hosting a clean and green from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Not to be outdone is the final winter Farmer's Market of the season which will last until 2:00pm. And just in case that wasn't enough to do, the annual kids clothing, toy and equipment resale will also be hosted.
LAKEVIEW
Are you a nerd at heart? For all my singles out there, local connectors Nerds at Heart are hosting a singles mixer at the Holiday Club, 4000 N. Sheridan. A great alternative to the traditional singles scene, this group will have board games and themed trivia at all tables. Part of the proceeds benefit Northside College Prep's Joy Garden, a multi-use site featuring sustainable initiatives and wildlife-friendly plantings that functions as an outdoor classroom for special education students.
SOUTH LOOP
The weather has been so beautiful this past week; why not take a tour hosted by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. There are walking and bus tours currently available with some really interesting options. You can take the Devil in the White City Companion Bus Tour which highlights the emergence of America's first mass murderer and the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, two simultaneous events in Chicago's history. What's not to love about that?
LINCOLN SQUARE
In Fine Spirits Lounge is celebrating its two-year anniversary on Thursday and Friday. Opened as an add-on to In Fine Spirits Wine Store, this lounge has brought more than wine knowledge to the local area. Thursday night's special is a three-course dinner with optional whiskey pairings. If you can't make it Thursday then skip out of work early and enjoy free appetizers at the bar from 3-5 p.m. If you go Thursday be on the lookout for the Zombie Pub Crawl.
EVANSTON
This Earth Day join Jean-Michel Cousteau for a discussion of the Earth's Underwater Ecosystems at Northwestern's Evanston Campus in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Cousteau is the son of world-famous Jacques Cousteau and shares the love of the ocean with his father. Jean-Michel founded the Ocean Futures Society in 1999 with the intent of being the "Voice for the Ocean." Space for the event is limited so be sure to RSVP.
