CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS – PORTAGE PARK, LAKEVIEW, LOOP, GOLD COAST, EVANSTON
PORTAGE PARK
Grab your reusable bags and head to the Portage Park Farmer's market this weekend. The market is being held this Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm which will feature local farms. You can find produce, meat, dairy, bakeries and other goods all from the comfort inside the Field House Gymnasium.
The Garden Club is also featuring an event that morning so you can get some great information and then head straight over to the market.
LAKEVIEW
As Robin Leach used to say, "Champagne wishes and caviar dreams." They can be had at the new Beauty Bar. It opens this Thursday in the former Sontheque space and looks like a set from the movie Hairspray. With this new twist (pun intended) on the dance scene you'll see vintage salon furniture, manicures, glitter and hot dance moves all in one space. It's sure to be the toast of new nightlife.
LOOP
Most Chicagoans know about the shortcut using Lower Wacker Drive to get to the Eisenhower Expressway. Well, my friends, that shortcut will be taking a lot longer than it has. Starting next month, the Wacker ramps to and from Congress will be closed to facilitate bridge work. Construction season is starting soon here in Chicago and planning your trips and time accordingly especially for those taking the Eisenhower will be really important.
GOLD COAST
If you've been thinking about buying, have the purchasing power, need an agent and want to get into a Gold Coast location, then mark your calendars. This weekend you can view properties at 1400 Lake Shore Drive that will be set up for auction on April 25th. The auction will take place at the Doubletree Hotel Chicago, 300 Ohio Street. This is the first time in 20 years that condos have been put up for auction on Lake Shore Drive.
EVANSTON
Anne McKenna, second grade teacher in the Spanish-English immersion program at Dewey Elementary School, is one of three 2010 winners of a Kohl McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Award. The Kohl McCormick Foundation said she is an inspiring teacher and leader who engages parents with a Spanish Family Reading Night. The praise she receives from parents and her peers was also a determining factor.
