Sue MossChicago, the City of Big Shoulders, has certainly stepped up to the plate this past week by collecting over $2.5 million for the refugees of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti thus far.

In these tough economic times, it's very difficult parting with the little money we do have, especially here in Chicago, but the fact remains that the Haitians are in desperate need of help.  So this weekend, while you are out and about, here are a few ways in which you can give to the relief efforts in Haiti -

Helping in the Wake of the Quake

Diners at selected Chicago area restaurants can add a dollar or more to their bill, which will be donated to the Heartland Alliance's relief efforts for Haiti.  A few of the participating restaurants are Aja, Berghoff, Goose Island Brew Pub, Miramar, SushiSamba Rio and much more.  Here's your chance to try a restaurant you haven't been to and help out at the same time!  Click here for a complete list of restaurants, make your reservations directly on Opentable, or donate directly if your plans don't include dining out.

Haitian Relief Fund Raffle

DMK Burger Bar located in the Lakeview neighborhood, will donate $2 from every burger purchase this weekend to the American Red Cross relief fund for Haiti.  Purchase a $20 ticket for your chance to win free burgers for a month!  The drawing will take place on January 30th, however, your attendance is not required.  Wow -- a whole month of free burgers.  Maybe you can donate your winnings to a needy area charity?  Click here for more information.

A Bake Sale for Haiti

This Saturday from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., help support Medici on 57th (1327 E. 57th Street), along with Bleeding Heart Bakery, Luscious Layers Bakery and others by purchasing baked goods in their efforts to support the relief efforts in Haiti.  Click here for more information.

Soles 4 Souls Drive

House of Sole located in the South Loop is helping to provide footwear to the earthquake survivors in Haiti.  Donate a pair of gently used, wearable shoes by dropping them off at the boutique, or perhaps even purchase some new shoes from them!  Donations of $1-$2 will be accepted as well to help defray the cost of shipping the donated shoes; however, it's not required.  Click here for more information.

While you're out there doing your good deed, don't forget the fifth annual Polar Adventure Days this Saturday at Northerly Island.  This indoor-outdoor winter celebration has much to offer such as an arctic camping demo and dog sled team, ice sculptures, storytelling and much more.  Make sure you're one of the first 500 visitors so you can get your free hot chocolate!  Click here for more information.

Need some color in your life besides gray?  Then take in a colorful display of azaleas, annuals and perennials at the Lincoln Park Conservatory's Spring Flower Show, which kicks of on Saturday and runs through May 9th.  Why wait for spring - click here for more information.

The Haitians really need our help, so let's show them how big our shoulders really are!!
