THIS WEEKEND IN CHICAGO - ARCTIC BLAST ARRIVES TO RING IN 2010!

Sue MossI thought it would only be fitting to offer some entertaining hangover remedies this weekend as we say good-bye to 2009.

I realize that not every one of us will need a remedy, but a hangover is not required for any of these weekend events.

The Great Outdoors - Arctic Blast Doesn't Stop These Folks!

The 25th annual New Year's Day 5K Run and Walk will draw about 1,500 runners and walkers (well, maybe, given the arctic blast) to the Lincoln Park neighborhood.  The route is north along the lakefront to Diversey Harbor and back around to the finish line.  Afterwards, Sedgwick's Bar & Grill will host a post-race party which includes one beer or cocktail, a raffle and even an awards ceremony.  Click here for more information.

Or, if you're unable to hold your own weight, there's always the Weather Be Damned Ride, which is a 5- to 10-mile bike ride meeting up at the Lakefront Bike Path Clock Tower (3700 N. Lake Shore Drive) at 10:00 a.m. on New Year's Day.  The ride will end up at the Red Apple in the Logan Square neighborhood, so don't forget your lunch money!  Click here for more information.

You might just want to be a spectator at this one - the Polar Bear Club New Year's Day Swim.  At high Noon, the polar bears meet at the North Avenue Beach boathouse in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.  The polar bears will then disrobe their warm clothing to reveal their swimsuits (no nudity or wetsuits allowed), take photos for commemoration and RUN INTO THE LAKE!  However, they must go completely underwater for it to count.  Please note there will be no medical assistance at this event, so if you choose to participate as a polar bear, do so wisely.  All I can say is BRRRRR!!  Click here for more information.

The Great Indoors - Arctic Blast Has These Polar Bears Hibernating!

Its "Bowl" time and I don't mean tossing a ball down a lane to knock over pins!  We're staying indoors - remember?

Here's this weekend's NCAA TV line-up:

Friday, January 1st

Outback Bowl - Auburn Tigers vs. Northwestern Wildcats - ESPN, 11 a.m.

Capital One Bowl - Penn State Nittany Lions vs. LSU Tigers - ABC, 1 p.m.

Gator Bowl - West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Florida State Seminoles - CBS, 1 p.m.

Rose Bowl - Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Oregon Ducks - ABC, 5 p.m.

Sugar Bowl - Florida Gators vs. Cincinnati Bearcats, FOX, 8:30 p.m.

Saturday, January 2nd

International Bowl - South Florida Bulls vs. Northern Illinois Huskies - ESPN2, Noon

Cotton Bowl - Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Mississippi Rebels - FOX, 2 p.m.

PapaJohns.com Bowl - Connecticut Huskies vs. South Carolina Gamecocks - ESPN, 2 p.m.

Liberty Bowl - East Carolina Pirates vs. Arkansas Razorbacks - ESPN2, 5:30 p.m.

Alamo Bowl - Michigan State Spartans vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders - ESPN, 9 p.m.

Not interested in college football?  Well, neither am I, so I'm just going to cuddle-up all weekend, read a book or two, and eat lots of popcorn (no butter, I'm starting my New Year's resolution) while watching my movies on DVD that I've been hoarding away just for Chicago arctic blast days like these!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR - Stay Warm and Safe -- whether you're an outie or an innie!!!
