KATHY’S HOME & GARDEN – FALL IS COMING!
Yes summer is about over and our thoughts turn to prepare the home and garden for winter weather. The reports of mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus are turning up in test areas, so even though hot weather is over there is still danger from West Nile.
Make sure there are no areas of standing water where mosquitoes can breed around your home. Make sure to use insect repellant whenever you go outside especially at dusk and dawn. West Nile can be very serious especially in the elderly and very young.
Now is a great time to seed your lawn. The cooler weather now is great for grass! Keep the seed moist every day and you should see grass sprouting within 14 days. After it gets a few inches high cover with good topsoil.
As your garden vegetables finish for the year pull them out and dispose. Don't leave them in the garden, any disease or insects in them will just overwinter and cause problems next year. Add compost to the soil for better plants next year.
Over the next few weeks we'll be talking about hints for the home and garden to help you get ready for the cold weather to come.
