CHICAGO IN 1948 - The More Things Change . . .
THE YOUTUBE TIME MACHINE TAKES YOU BACK. BUT, HEY . . . I RECOGNIZE THAT!
1948! Over 60 years ago! I wasn't around back then. Likely, neither were YOU!
But my beloved home town, Chicago, where I was born, raised, and have lived all my life - definitely WAS!
I caught this video from The Chicago Tribune, linked to a video on YouTube of a 1948 TravelTalks Travelogue, done by somewhat-schmaltzy reporter James A. Fitzpatrick, entitled "Chicago The Beautiful."
Take a look at this ten-minute video. Indeed, so much has changed - but, look carefully, when you come to visit Chicago. So much is still there!
Especially take a look at the opening scene - the East Randolph Drive, now home to Millenium Park, The Prudential Building (I and II), the Aon Center (formerly, The Standard Oil Building), and famed restaurant La Strada - all railroad yards back in the 1940's. All of the buildings, and later our famed park, were constructed on air rights over these tracks, beginning in the mid-1950's.
Your town over the last 60-plus years? It has changed, yes - but, if you look, you'll likely find remnants of "Back in the Day." Waaaay Back!
