CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS – LAKEVIEW, LINCOLN PARK, SOUTH LOOP, RAVENSWOOD, NAPERVILLE

It's a simple thing really, going on a food tour of Chicago.  You can choose a neighborhood that highlights a specific ethnicity of food.  You can tour the city to try all variations of cuisine.

Not uncommon at all, right?  Well not exactly, because this group does it via bike.  This new company called Fork and the Road was founded by two people who met on the Chicago foodie web site LTHForum.com.

LINCOLN PARK

The South Pond at Lincoln Park Zoo has been undergoing some major reconstruction creating the "Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo."

Amazingly enough, the construction was stalled last year and this by the black crowned night heron, an endangered species that came from the wild.  Currently the island in the middle of the man-made pond - a shallow, dirty, 140-year-old ditch - is the one location that the birds find a perfect breeding ground.

SOUTH LOOP

Today marks the beginning of the Jazz Showcase's annual celebration of alto saxophone great, Charlie Parker.

Starting 54 years ago, Joe Segal, then a student at Roosevelt University, convened a session to commemorate the "Bird's" revolutionary sound.  Parker is said to have revolutionized jazz and been the founder of what we call "bebop" today.

RAVENSWOOD

Shopping and eating local has become so much easier in this day and age.  We've got farmer's markets throughout the city not to mention our own gardens.

Local caterer City Provisions has taken culinary excursions to a new level by creating their own version.  Taking you on a trip through local markets and local wineries/breweries is part of the trip, including being chauffered in a bio-diesel bus.

NAPERVILLE

Go to the Saturday morning farmer's market at Naperville's 5th Avenue Station and you'll find Charles Lorence, master beekeeper.

While waiting in the dentist's office in 1971, Lorence read about apiary and recalled his father's hives from when he was a child.  What started out as a hobby has become a passion and second job for him and his wife, Karen, who makes honey-based skin care products and candles.
