TECHNOLOGY TIPS - AMAZON'S KINDLE GREAT READING ON CHICAGO'S EL
One of the items on my wish list for my birthday (coming in a couple months, hint, hint) is the Amazon Kindle.
It's a wonderful way to read books in a compact design. It's powered by Amazon, has instant wireless acess to 115,000 books sold on Amazon, an audiobook player and a wireless web browser. The data connectivity is free of charge through their "Whispernet" and uses a cellular network to deliver books, newspapers, magazines and weblogs to you instantly.
While it's primarily driven by Amazon, it can also read from Audible.com's protected audiobooks, books in Mobipocket or text formats, HTML or Word documents and limited MP3 music support.
Bear in mind that this device is specifically for reading. It's not a replacement to other devices offering gaming, a backlight, color or telephone service. What it does make up for though is its amazing access to all things written. Let's say you want to get your newspaper, several blogs and book. The cost is minimal - $9.99 for a new release, $4-7 for paperbacks. You have all this wonderful information at your fingertips.
Some of the other highlights that I really like include the built-in Oxford American Dictionary, which makes looking up a definition extremely easy. There is also a text enlarger for those with tired or older eyes. Finally, for someone like me who reads more than one book at a time, the Kindle can definitely accommodate my needs easily.
There is so much more to say about this device and you can read an additional review here. As for me, I'm going to be saving my pennines because I just know Mom will love it when I give her one for the holidays.
