TECHNOLOGY TIPS – GOOGLE MAY JUST HAVE SOME COMPETITION
Last week Microsoft announced a new search engine
specifically designed to compete with Google.
Like several Microsoft announcements of late, it was met with a lot of
skepticism and actual negativity. "Bing
stands for But It's Not Google" is one of the many negative comments received,
but I'm here to tell you that I was fairly impressed by this search engine.
Today, you can now access Bing. There are a couple nuances to this search
engine that I really like.
One thing is at the bottom left of the page showing my
search history. Another interesting
aspect of this search engine is when you hover over a two line descriptor of
your search result, you'll get additional information in a balloon to the
right. Being able to do a quick browse
of a site before clicking through will definitely help you save on time.
So there's also another search engine on the horizon called Blekko. This engine is not yet active, but it has
some really strong backers that gives it credence already.
The leader of this team is Rich Skrenta, creator of the
first computer virus (the Elk Cloner) and
co-founder of Topix.
Skrenta's team has been backed by two early Google investment angels and
talk of launch later this year is looming.
