KATHY’S HOME & GARDEN TIPS – ROOF AND GUTTER MAINTENANCE

All the rain in and around the Chicago area gives us a chance to
check our gutters and downspouts to make sure they are flowing properly. Full gutters cause rainwater to splash back against the roof, in time this will cause damage to the shingles and wood underneath.
When it rains check all around the house. Is water coming out of the downspouts? Does the water flow over the gutters? Does the water pool around the foundation? These are indications that you have work to do.
When cleaning your gutters, use a ladder that is at least three feet higher than the gutter. Always have a person spot you when you are on the ladder. Use a scoop made from the top of a plastic jug to get out as many leaves and debris as possible. Stick the garden hose down the downspout and run the water to clear out any leaves there. Pound the downspout with your hand until any clogs are loosened and flow out the bottom.
A long running gutter should slope gently towards the downspout. Check yours with a level.
If your gutters leak fix holes and seal seams with caulking or a gutter repair kit from your local hardware store.
Water pooling around the foundation can be easily remedied with a downspout extension. There are many different types available. Always divert water away from the house.
While you are up on the ladder have a quick look at the roof. Are there loose or deteriorating shingles? Is there a large amount of shingle sand in the gutters? Any of these signs require a professional evaluation. Check out our Preferred Professionals Directory at dean-team.com for a good roofer.
Keeping your gutters and downspouts flowing will certainly extend the life of your roof.
