KATHY'S HOME & GARDEN TIPS - HOME OFFICE ENERGY SAVINGS

Kathleen Weaver Zech - Dean's Team Director of Buyers Agency ServicesSince many of us are working out of the house these days, I thought I would talk about saving energy.  In the Chicago area we have some of the highest utility rates in the country, so this is even more important.

A computer monitor can account for half the energy usage for your entire system.  Turn it off when not in use. Use the sleep feature to power down idle equipment.

A good ink-jet printer might be adequate for your needs. Laser printers are more expensive to buy initially and use more energy to operate. Turn the printer off between uses, all equipment uses energy in stand-by mode

Your screen saver is not saving you energy. Turn it off.

It's a good idea to plug all your office equipment into power strips that can be turned off with a flip of a switch.

Consider a laptop when purchasing a new computer. They typically use a lot less power than a desktop.

Make sure all new equipment you buy has the Energy Star label. It's been estimated that using office equipment with this label can save enough energy during it's lifetime to light your entire home for more than four years.
