LAKEVIEW
In
tough economic times, celebrating the Jewish fall
harvest holiday within a pre-manufactured sukkah just didn't seem right,
according to Art Freidman.
Instead, Freidman spent hours on his knees, hammering nails into
wood to build the temporary hut-like structure in his backyard, which he and his
wife, Erica, decorated. They hung
hanging fruits, vegetables and cozy table settings as breaking away from their
busy lives to thank God for his abundant provision.
Sukkot is especially
relevant this year as families struggle with anxiety over the uncertain economy
and world affairs.
"We are living at a time that feels
remarkably unstable," said Rabbi Michael Siegel of Anshe Emet Synagogue in the
Lakeview community. "Whether
we're talking about the economy or foreign policy or the security of an
individual family simply to stay in their home-Americans have a great deal to be
concerned about."

In the busy downtown
section bordered by Wabash as well as State, Madison and Monroe Streets, you
might notice the $190 million restoration of the former Carson Pirie Scott &
Co. store being rehabbed by developer Joseph Freed and Associates. The remodeled nine-building complex, has
fittingly been re-named the Sullivan Center.
A rare find was
discovered during the restoration of three post-Chicago Fire buildings on South
Wabash Avenue. A previously unknown
storefront facade designed by the great Chicago architect Louis Sullivan has
been found.
The five-story
Atwater Building, with its distinctive arches is found on Wabash. Two other four-story buildings to its right,
also have classical decorations. The
one-story Sullivan storefront is located at 22 S. Wabash which make up buildings
that are part of the nine-structure complex that once housed the Carson Pirie
Scott & Co. State Street store. It,
too, was designed by Sullivan.

The Carl B. Roden
Branch Library has marked its 40th anniversary with a mini celebration on Sept.
27. Magician Jeff Bibik from Edison Park
was on hand and wowed the crowd with his fun and silly tricks. Author and cartoonist Nicole Hollander lead
adult visitors to try capturing memories in a memoir workshop.
All the while, there
was a chance for retired branch employees to reminisce with current branch heads
and other library officials about this particular branch's special roots, named
for the man who headed the Chicago Public Library for nearly half a century.
