KATHY'S HOME & GARDEN TIPS - FIRE SAFETY CHECKLIST
Kathleen Weaver Zech - Dean's Team Director of Buyers Agency ServicesFire Safety is something you should be checking on at least once a year.  The following checklist is designed to assist you to make sure you are keeping things safe at home.

1.      Is there at least one smoke detector near every bedroom and on every level?

2.      Do you know how your alarm sounds?

3.      Do you regularly check the batteries and test your smoke alarms?

4.      Is there a fire extinguisher in your home and do you and your family know how to use it?

5.      Do you have a fire escape plan posted with all the exits?

6.      Have you and your family had a fire drill?

7.      Does everyone know two exits from every room?

8.      Do you know how to call the fire dept in case of emergency?

9.      Do all the windows in your home open easily?

10.  Do all smokers at home know never to smoke in bed?

11.  Are ashtrays large with holders in the center for cigarettes?

12.  Are all electrical cords in good condition?

13.  Are extension cords kept out from under rugs and carpets?

14.  Is only one appliance or device plugged into an extension cord?

15.  Is there a tight fitting screen in front of your fireplace?

16.  Is the chimney cleaned every year?

17.  Is your furnace cleaned annually?

18.  Are curtains and clothing kept away from stoves and heaters?

19.  Is there proper distance between wood heaters and there vents and combustible walls?

20.  Are spaces around the furnace and water heaters clear of debris and combustible material?

21.  Are all areas free of newspapers, old trash or rags that could easily burn?

22.  Are areas outside your home free of trash, high weeds and rubbish?

23.  Are gasoline and other flammable liquids kept in proper containers?

24.  Are fuses or circuit breakers proper for your home?

25.  Does everyone in your family know the safe meeting place outside in case of fire?

26.  Does your family know how to get out quickly and stay out of a burning building?

27.  Does everyone in your family know how to check for fire exits when they are in a public building?

Answering no to any of these questions puts your family at risk. A little forethought and planning will keep them safe.
