JEFF'S SPORTS BLOG - THE BEARS DON’T LOOK A WHOLE LOT DIFFERENT

Jeff Ardito - Dean's Team Listing Specialist!

Yes, Bears fans, it's a different year but I don't think we can expect too much to be different and improved vs. last year.  I know it's tough to gauge after just one preseason game but the Bears looked awful in key areas and now have their first round pick, Chris Williams, out indefinitely due to back surgery.  It's a crime that the Bears have had the worse luck with their first round picks.

The offense didn't really shine until later in the second half under 3rd string QB, Caleb Hanie.  Under QB, Kyle Orton, the team looked a bit sluggish and was unable to punch the ball into the endzone.  Finally, in the second half, QB, Rex Grossman hit running back, Garrett Wolf, on a short pass that Wolf ran in for a 25-yard touchdown.  Wolf exhibited great speed on the play and also had an earlier run of 46 yards from scrimmage.

Despite Hanie's performance, both Orton and Grossman didn't really impress with Orton only having 56 yards passing and Grossman despite the aforementioned touchdown only threw for 44 yards making the duo's total a mere 100 yards of passing in almost three quarters of play.  Equally frustrating was the Bears inability to run the ball effectively with rookie running back, Matt Forte, running for only 25 yards on seven carries and catching three passes for just 10 yards.  Wolf had a much better performance but it's unlikely he would see a lot of carries in the regular season due to being a smaller back.

I know it's only the first pre-season game but we played at home and against the Kansas City Chiefs who are not very good.  The Bears have a long way to go to compete for the Central Division title - Thank God Brett Favre is not a Packer anymore.  Yes, we're all a bit tired of the whole Brett Favre saga but I'm glad he's not in our division anymore.
