KATHY'S HOME & GARDEN TIPS - TIPS FOR MIDSUMMER LAWN AND GARDEN
Kathleen Weaver Zech - Dean's Team Director of Buyers Agency ServicesFertilize the lawn with an all purpose fertilizer. There are a lot on the market so be sure to choose depending on what your lawn needs.

All fertilizers have three numbers in their formula. Pick the fertilizer with the larger first number for root development. If you have weed problems use weed and feed.

When fertilizing, make sure the lawn is well watered before application. Try to apply when chances for rain are slim. You want to have the fertilizer settle into the grass for a while before getting washed down.  This is especially important if you are looking for weed kill. Stick to your usual one inch water per week on lawn and garden. Pay attention to areas that might not get enough rain for example under trees. You may need to spot water these areas. The Chicago area has had pretty good rain coverage this summer, but we all have spots that need more water.

My garden is having a great year because the weather has been favorable for many garden crops. I've not seen such a good tomato crop, but keep an eye on crops like peppers and cucumbers (cukes). These plants prefer cooler temps than tomatoes. Make sure they are getting enough water. My cukes and peppers are partially under a pine tree, this way they are protected from too much sun.

A few weeks ago I noticed some small insects on my tomatoes. I dusted them with a tomato and vegetable dust and this past weekend, they looked fantastic! You usually don't want to dust within a few days of harvest, but check your dust's instructions and follow them exactly. There is so much wildlife in my yard climbing and who knows what else on all the plants that I feel safer carefully washing everything with soap and water.

Good Gardening!
