JEFF'S CHICAGO SPORTS BLOG: Rich Harden has Impressive Debut for Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field!

RIGHT-HANDED PITCHER CARLOS MARMOL:  ANOTHER WOBBLY RELIEF APPEARANCE!  CUB FANS CONCERNED!

Jeff Ardito - Dean's Team Listing Specialist!

The Chicago Cubs are ecstatic they won yesterday despite blowing a 7-0 lead due to sloppy defensive play and a struggling reliever in Carlos Marmol.

Yesterday, was the debut of newly acquired starting pitcher, Rich Harden.  Harden came to the Cubs in a six-player deal that was made a day after the Milwaukee Brewers acquired starting pitcher C.C. Sabbathia from the Cleveland Indians.  The trade for Harden was very well received by Cubs fans and yesterday proved that the excitement was certainly justified.

In just 5.1 innings Harden struck ten batters and didn't allow a run.  He dominated the San Francisco Giants' lineup with a blistering fastball and very effective splitter.  Harden kept the Giant hitters off balance and allowed just 5 hits while only walking 3 batters.  The anticipation of his debut was on the minds of the baseball world as many experts believe that his acquisition makes the Cubs a true contender for post-season play.

Last night, the Cubs were high up on the Top Stories on Sports Network ESPN due to the anticipation of Harden's debut as well as their exciting extra-inning victory over the struggling Giants.  Despite the surrendering of a seven run lead, Cub fans have to be happy that Harden appears as though he's the real deal.  The concern is his history of injuries which have plagued him for the better part of his career.  The Cubs will seek to maximize his recuperation between starts and limit his pitch count.

In a year that promises to be exciting, Rich Harden might just be the final piece for the Cubs to make a serious run and that has every Cub fan filled with anticipation and wonder.
