"THE SPINDLE," Berwyn IL's Quirky Stacked-Car Art, Stands No More!

NO BIDS ON EBAY - SO 1989 DUSTIN SHULER SCULPTURE DISMANTLED, IN TWO HOURS, LAST NIGHT!

The Spindle, by Artist Dustin Shuler - Sculpture Created 1989, Dismantled, May, 2008 - Cermak Plaza Shopping Center, Berwyn IL

To local residents, a memorable icon tying their city of Berwyn to quirky history.  To others, a local eyesore - a nesting place for pigeons, and a magnet for bird poop.  You couldn't drive by without turning your head, or remembering the scene in the 1992 movie Wayne's World in which it was immortalized internationally.

Now, the spindle, this collection of eight cars skewered high in the air, is gone.  Dismantled!  This piece of unique artwork that business owners in the Cermak Plaza Shopping Center, at the corner of Harlem Avenue and Cermak Roads in his Chicago suburb, claimed actually increased their business from sight-seers from all over is in the dumpster.

Two pieces of the sculpture were saved for posterity, however - the 1967 VW at the top of the spindle, and the 1976 BMW immediately underneath it, were removed by the demolition crew before the rest of the sculpture was pushed down.  Perhaps they will be relocated elsewhere on shopping center grounds in the future, or even in the yet-to-be-conceived Berwyn Museum of Contemporary Art!

What's going up in place of The Spindle?

You might have guessed - a Walgreen's Drug Store, with expected completion date later this year.

But you'll always have your fond memories!

Read more about the sculpture on Wikipedia.com, and view video from Chicago's WGN TV, Channel 9, in today's Chicago Tribune story.
