CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS - EDGEWATER, GOLD COAST, LOGAN SQUARE, JEFFERSON PARK, NAPERVILLE
EDGEWATER
It's springtime and time to think green.
A horticultural Uptown resident, Casey, maintains small gardens outside her condo building in the neighborhood. She was invited to join in a browsing expedition of the Andersonville/Edgewater gardens at Gethsemane Garden Center (5739 N. Clark St., 773-878-5915). Casey, of course, was thrilled to help in the venture.
There were rows of pansies, carnations, ranunculus, daffodils, primroses, hyacinths, tulips, daisies and other flowers on display. Over 20 varieties of hellebores (such as Lenten roses) and other perennials that the center is introducing to the Chicago market this spring were on display too. And several varieties of sweet-scented jasmine awakened the senses. To read the article, click here.
GOLD COAST
From the shoreline of beautiful Lake Michigan to the banks of the Chicago River Chicagoans have a fond connection to the waterfront.
That link will be stronger, and longer, by the end of the year when the river walk trail downtown is extended.
Construction is set and scheduled to begin in July to literally bridge the river walk beyond the Wabash Avenue Bridge to State Street.
Five outdoor cafés that appeared for the first time last summer on the river walk since the reconstruction of Wacker Drive in 2001 and 2002 will be back again this year. In addition a bicycle rental vendor and arts and crafts offerings will be available.
The long-term goal of the Mayor's office is to transform the venue into a major tourist attraction, much like the river walk in San Antonio, where restaurants, bars and shops flourish. Read all about it by clicking here.
LOGAN SQUARE
A fire spread throughout a three-story brick building in the city's Logan Square neighborhood Saturday, but no injuries were reported.
Chicago Fire crews were called to 3054 W. Armitage Ave. at 4:35 p.m. and had the blaze under control within an hour, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
