KATHY'S HOME & GARDEN TIPS - SPRING ROOF AND GUTTER CHECKS
Kathleen Weaver Zech - Dean's Team Director of Buyers Agency Services

Yes, the gutter pest is back.

It is imperative that you keep your gutters clean and free flowing. Clogged gutters can cause water to splash up against the roof.  This will cause damage to the shingles and cause the roof to leak.

Use a ladder that extends at least a few feet beyond the roof for safety. Make sure you are on solid level ground and have another person on the ground to steady the ladder. Scoop out any leaves and debris with your hands. Then put the end of the garden hose in the start of the downspout. Turn on the hose full blast. If it's still not flowing, bang on the side of the downspout. This is usually enough to dislodge the obstruction. Let the hose run until the water flows clear.

While you're up there have a look at the condition of your roof. The following are signs to look for that the roof might need replacing.

  • Shingles that are curling, buckling, or blistering
  • Loose material around chimneys or other penetrations
  • Excessive amounts of shingle granules in the gutter
  • Check inside the house and attic for water damage

If you think there is a problem, have it checked out by a reputable roofing contractor.  Check out our preferred professional list. There are roofers here to choose from. If you need a personal reference give me a call.
