KATHY'S HOME & GARDEN TIPS - POWER WASHING BRICK

Early Spring is a good time to check out the condition of the brick exterior on your home. Examine the mortar for cracks. These can be filled with
mortar repair. This comes in a caulking tube available at hardware stores and home centers and is super easy to use. Be aware that you won't be able to match the color. Older mortar will darken as it ages. Make sure you don't seal the weep holes at the bottom of the brick. These are necessary to wick out any moisture that finds its' way behind the brick.
Loose bricks and mortar must be removed, cleaned and reinstalled. Use mortar mix to reset them. There are different mortar tools available to match the mortar finish on the rest of your brick. Where other materials join the brick, such as wood window frames or sills, you must caulk. Use a good quality caulk rated for outside use. These come in different colors and it should be relatively easy to match.
After sealing and repair has cured for a couple of weeks you can clean and power wash. If you have mildew or other stains treat them first. Bleach and water works well. Be careful not to damage plants and shrubs in the process. Next, start power washing using a solution formulated for brick. Stay away from windows and trim, that's why they call it POWER WASHING it's powerful!!
Keep plants and soil away from the brick, it needs air circulation at all times. If you are having a recurring problem with mildew, use a water sealer over the area.
