LIL' BUDDY'S BLOG - Taking us Dogs on Vacation is Getting Easier!

THE CHICAGO IL REAL ESTATE MARKET, AND OTHER THINGS CHICAGO, FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF A LITTLE WHITE DOG!
Buddy Goes for a Ride - 03-11-2007.JPG

This would be me, getting ready for another road trip last Spring in Chicago with my Human Dad, Team Leader Dean!  Wheee!!

According to the Travel Industry Association of America 29 Million Americans, perhaps more, traveled with their dogs or cats within the past three years.  That's a number major hotel chains, airlines, and cities with nice, dog-friendly parks just cannot ignore!  As humans begin the springtime ritual of finalizing their Summer, 2008 vacation plans, I thought I would review a couple of important travel considerations for us lil' animals.

Several airlines allow dogs to travel in the passenger cabin - if they are small enough to fit in a crate under the seat for the flight (I just make it!)  The old "dog in the baggage hold" is not a very comfortable, or healthy, option for us anymore.  If you want to pay for a full extra seat - we'll have more room, but no discount in fare.  Sorry, you humans can't let us loose to roam up and down the aisles during the beverage service - high security risk, you know.

Click here for information on airlines that allow dogs to fly in the passenger cabin, courtesy of PetFriendlyTravel.com.  Some charter airlines also allow us to fly with our human companions, some with slightly relaxed rules.

Many hotels across the U.S. and in Canada allow dogs to stay in guest rooms, sometimes for an additional security deposit.  Here in Chicago, there are 20 such hotels in the city, many more in the suburbs, including the larger chains like Crowne Plaza, Hilton, Sofitel, Omni, and The Fairmont.  See DogFriendlyHotels.com for a list of Chicago hotels, and others nationwide.

A few of the more exclusive hotels offer concierge service to walk your dog - some hold special dog-oriented events, such as dog cocktail parties (please, no little cocktail weenies - and last I checked, I'm still not old enough to order a cold PBR, or a shot of Jack).

Believe it or not, there are dozens of parks, beaches, trails, attractions, and a few stores friendly to us four-pawed friends.  Check out DogFriendly.com for a list of those in Chicago, with links to other cities across North America.

Also, check out a brief AP story in the March 3rd edition of The Chicago Tribune for the latest trends in pet travel.

Just wanted to catch you before you finalized those vacation plans for later in the year.  Dean, Sue - there is NO EXCUSE not to take me with you when you head out of town this year, right?

Hey, you dogs (and cats, too) - make sure your humans read this post!  Don't forget now!  Woof, woof!
