KATHY'S HOME & GARDEN TIPS - GOING GREEN IN CHICAGO
Kathleen Weaver Zech - Dean's Team Director of Buyers Agency Services

START GREENING UP YOUR HOUSE WITH A TANKLESS WATER HEATER

Technology advances and increased popularity are making tankless water heaters more affordable and attainable for the general public. Depending on the system used energy savings can be as high as 40 some percent. If you are a seasoned DIY person, installing can be done without a professional. You need a good knowledge of plumbing basics, sweating pipe etc. Do your research. You need to know about flow rates, temperature of supply water coming in, number of hot water devices. All this info is available on the net.

The Tribune had a great article February 21, 2008 by Alan Heavens, It's a Tankless Task to Heat Water.  It tells how to calculate flow rates plus other needed info. All in all these are great for energy savings and are also helpful in a household that uses a lot of hot water.  They provide hot water on demand.

Initial costs can be high especially if you do professional installation. The energy savings will pay for this. The time it takes will depend on whether you use gas or electricity and your hot water usage.
