KATHY'S HOME & GARDEN TIPS - PREPPING FOR A PAINT JOB
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION, AND ALL THAT!
There is still time to spruce up the house with some new paint. Painting is the least expensive way to change the look of a room. It can be fun and fairly easy if you do your prep work first.
1. Move out as much furniture as possible. Cover everything else with drop cloths. These can be purchased inexpensively at any paint store or home improvement center. Cover light fixtures with plastic garbage bags and secure with tape. If you are new to painting remove switch plates and receptacle covers. When you get more experience you can just cut around them.
2. Your paint job will be more successful with clean walls. A solution of Flax soap and water works well. A ¼ cup to a gallon of water is sufficient. Start at the bottom working your way up using a large sponge, rinsing often. Allow time for the walls to completely dry. Fill holes with drywall patch. If you have any stains on the walls you need to prep these with a product such as Kilz, which will prevent the stain from bleeding through.
3. Prime the rest of the wall with regular primer. If you are painting over dark paint it may be necessary to prime twice allowing each coat to dry completely.
Now you are ready to paint. Cut in with a good 2-3 inch brush. This is painting around the corners in the room where the roller can't reach. If you have a steady hand you don't need to tape, but I find it easier to put masking tape around the perimeter.
Have Fun!!!!!
