BEARS LINEBACKER UNDERGOES SURGERY

Jeff Ardito - Dean's Team Listing Specialist!CHICAGO BEARS LINEBACKER, BRIAN URLACHER, HAS NECK SURGERY

Bear fans got word this week that the heart and soul of their defense, Middle Linebacker, Brian Urlacher had minor surgery on his neck to take care of a problem that was affecting the curvature of his spine.

The surgery, although considered non-career threatening, makes Bear fans a little uneasy as Urlacher was slowed by an arthritic back this past season.  This recent surgery isn't related to the arthritis but it does make you wonder if we've seen the best of Urlacher and if his career is potentially on the downside.

Furthermore, it points to the question of what will the Bears decide to do with outside linebacker, Lance Briggs.  He is set to test the free agent market and is going to command top money.  If Urlacher's best days are indeed behind him and the Bears lose Briggs, it could be devastating to a defense that had its problems this past season.

So, it begs the question, what will the Bears do to safeguard the immediate future of their defense?  Would the Bears look to free agency or begin building via the draft in April?  Only time will tell but it will be very important for the Bears to address these issues as well as those facing the offense.

Given the many areas the Bears have to address let's hope that Urlacher is better than ever this coming season and that the Bears could find a way to keep Briggs on Urlacher's wing because together they are very formidable.
