OUR FAVORITE RECIPES - NOW THAT'S A SUPER BOWL CHICKEN

Cathy Mallers PhotoBEER CAN CHICKEN

What could be more Super Bowl than beer and chicken?  Okay, so we decided against the traditional chili option, and we're certain you'll like our chicken too!

SUMMARY

Difficulty: Easy

Prep Time:  15 minutes

Cook Time:  1 hour, 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS

1 (4 to 5-pound) whole chicken
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons salt
1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon paprika 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 can (12 ounce) beer

DIRECTIONS

Remove the giblets, neck and excess fat from the chicken. Be sure to wash the chicken inside and out.  Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel.

Combine the black pepper, garlic powder, salt, onion powder and paprika in a small bowl.  Rub the outside of the chicken with oil.  Next, rub the chicken inside and out with your spice mixture.  Set the chicken aside for now.

Pour 1/2 the can of beer into a cool frosty mug.  Set the 1/2 full beer can on a steady, flat surface.  Place the chicken upright (body cavity facing down) onto the beer can.

Form a tripod with the chicken legs and place in the center of a pre-heated grill.  Cook covered over medium-high, indirect heat - meaning the burners or coals are to one side of the chicken.  Cook for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours.  Chicken is ready when thigh juices run clear after being pierced with a fork.

Enjoy your frosty mug of beer while waiting for the chicken to cook or share with a friend!
