CHICAGO MAYOR DALEY ASKS FOR EARLIER CURFEW FOR TEENS
CURFEW WOULD BEGIN AT 10 PM WEEKNIGHTS, 11 PM WEEKENDS FOR THOSE UNDER 17
Speaking at a news conference on the South Side on Tuesday, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has proposed the city's curfew be strengthened to require children and teenagers under age 17 to be off the streets one-half earlier than is presently required by law. He spoke in reaction to a recent survey that found one in three teens know someone who has been a victim of handgun violence, and nearly 60% of young African-Americans fear getting shot in their neighborhoods.
"I know many people may not appreciate our curfew. . . ," Daley said. "But I believe it's time for us to extend it. . . .By taking this step, we're not trying to inconvenience parents or caregivers. We're not trying to make life more unfair for all our responsible children. We're trying to protect our children."
Police may use discretion in curfew enforcement for behaved teens returning home from work, for example.
Chicago Aldermen have mixed feelings on the proposed earlier teen curfew.
