CHICAGO SPORTS BLOG - THE CHICAGO CUBS AND THE SHORT TERM
WILL THE CHICAGO CUBS BE SOLD THIS YEAR?
Things get more interesting as time passes. The latest buzz in Cubdom has centered on when the Chicago Cubs will be sold and whether or not Wrigley Field will be included in such a sale or sold separately. It's never a dull moment on the North Side - even the talk of the park no longer being named Wrigley Field is perplexing.
Since 1926, the place where the Cubs have been played has been called Wrigley Field. 82 years of the name put into place to pay homage to the owner at that time, Mr. William Wrigley. Previous to that, Wrigley Field was called "Cubs Park" and before that Weeghman Park. Despite the uncertainty, Cubs Fans can at least revel in the mindset that the park will be there and be as beautiful as ever. Should the park be sold to the state of Illinois or included in the sale of the team, I'll always refer to it as Wrigley Field should the naming rights be sold. The tradition of baseball is one of its most alluring qualities and I'm definitely a purist.
I certainly look with great anticipation to this season that should put the Cubs right back into the thick of things given the nature of the National League Central Division and the fact that Lou Piniella has a year under his belt as Cubs manager. Nevertheless, I'm disenchanted that this eventual sale seems distracting and with its eventuality there will be so much potential for change.
Let's face it, we Cubs fans haven't had much to celebrate in the last century. One thing we could count on for a great deal of this past century is the beauty of Wrigley Field and what that has meant for fans worldwide. The tradition that is abundant with this professional field centered into a densely populated North side neighborhood now referred to as Wrigleyville by so many. If the naming rights are sold could we be looking at the new neighborhood of Cokeville or maybe Millerville - the latter might be more fitting.
Let's wait and see but it will certainly be interesting and I must say somewhat exciting since the prospect for new ownership might mean a true commitment - organization wide - to becoming a perennial contender for a championship. I sure hope that part of the future becomes reality for the best fans in all of baseball.
