KATHY'S HOME & GARDEN BLOG - TIME FOR SOME SPRUCING UP

SPRUCE UP ANY ROOM WITH SOME FRESH PAINT!

Kathleen Weaver Zech - Dean's Team Director of Buyers Agency Services

First let's prep the area to be painted. Walls should be clean and smooth. Fix any nail holes with spackle, using a scraper to smooth the hole. Let the spackle dry for at least 24 hours and sand with fine sandpaper till smooth.

If you have any stains, such as grease, it's a good idea to use a product such as Kilz on the wall first. Kilz is a brand name of a product that prevents any stain from bleeding through the new paint.  This will happen with many stains that are not treated.

When painting ceilings it can be tough to avoid dripping paint on yourself. Try using a paint roller attached to an extension pole. You can keep the roller in front of you and avoid drips. Of course don't forget to place drop cloths over all furniture and carpets.

Before painting any wall or ceiling you need to do a process called cutting in.  Using a three inch tapered brush and a steady hand, paint a border around the ceiling or wall. Use a natural bristle brush for oil based paint and nylon for latex.  Painting your ceiling will now be much easier.

Now that the stage is set, put a small amount of paint in the tray. Roll the paint lightly on the roller - you don't want the roller to be saturated. Thicker napped rollers leave a stippled surface while shorter napped ones leave a smoother feel.

Take your time and practice. Soon you'll be painting like a pro. Believe me when I say how satisfying it is to do such a project yourself, especially when you think of how much professional painters charge.
