Daddy and I just got back from Austin, Texas, and the Annual Keller Williams Mega Camp for its most successful agents . . . and, their little white dogs, of course! Too bad they didn't have my size in 10-Gallon Cowboy Hats, and Snakeskin Cowboy Boots - this dog would have really impressed the Chicago babes with these, you think?
Every day, when I suit up and go to work, I head to the Northside Chicago Neighborhood of Lincoln Square. Bordered by Montrose Avenue on the South, Foster Street on the North, Damen Avenue on the East, and the North Branch of the Chicago River on the West, over 44,000 Chicago residents call Lincoln Square their home. Roughly 4 1/2 miles northwest of Downtown Chicago and The Loop, Lincoln Square is home to over 1,000 small businesses, and dozens of locally-renown restaurants and clubs. One of my favorite establishments is The Huettenbar, at 4721 N. Lincoln Avenue. Featuring nearly 20 German draft beers, this bar is a great place to drop in after a long day of walking this beautiful neighborhood, and sniffing the local trees. (Be careful, folks, remember that German beers are nearly three-times more potent than their American counterparts!)
The Chicago Brauhaus, at 4732 N. Lincoln Avenue, also spotlights the neighborhood's German ancestry. Being a dog, I happen to like the Hackepeter, or Steak Tartar, the best, but all of their schnitzels are top-paw! Again, there is no shortage of authentic German brew here - in very large glasses - some even bigger than me! In the mood for other cuisine? Try one of my favorite Greek restaurants on the North Side - Barba Yianni's, at 4761 N. Lincoln. The Saganaki, or Flaming Cheese, can set your whiskers on fire if you're not careful, but it's GOOD! Just a couple of blocks to the west, and just south of the Rockwell Station on the Brown Line L, is Rockwell's - A Neighborhood Grill, at 4632 N. Rockwell. Great burgers and beverages here, in a cozy, smoke-free environment (everyone knows we dogs HATE smoke in bars - you never can get the smell out of your fur when you get home).
Want to get downtown, or to Dean's favorite summer entertainment (and torment) spot - Wrigley Field? Hop onto the Brown Line L, with stops at Rockwell, Western, and Damen Avenues. It's only about 25 minutes on the L to downtown, a little less than that to Wrigley. Fare is less than $2, with ChicagoCard and ChicagoCard Plus Farecards from the CTA.
In the mood for some neighborhood celebrating, doggy style? Lincoln Square is home to over a dozen neighborhood street festivals each year, at the neighborhood's center, at the six-way intersection of Lincoln, Lawrence, and Western Avenues, and on residential streets nearby. Each year Mayfest celebrates the different cultures spotlighted in the neighborhood. The Lincoln Square German American Fest is coming up soon - for three weekend days, beginning September 7th. There is also an annual Rib Fest at Wells Park, on Montrose and Western Avenues, each summer, and a Folk and Roots Festival each July.
