Bordering Lake Michigan just north of downtown Chicago is the neighborhood of Uptown. Known for its shops, restaurants, and theatres, Uptown draws in a large tourist population every year.
In 1900, the Uptown terminal was built by the Northwestern Elevated Railroad near Montrose and Broadway. Today, this stop is part of the CTA Red Line.
In the early 1900’s, the Uptown neighborhood underwent a housing construction boom. Large entertainment venues were built with impressive architectural detailing, contributing to what’s now known as the Uptown Entertainment District. Today, Uptown real estate offers a place to live amidst an active and vibrant area of Chicago.
Among the area's most popular venues are the Aragon Ballroom, Riviera Theater, Green Mill Jazz Club and the Uptown Theatre.
Nearly 500 early silent movies were filmed in Uptown in the 1920’s, featuring Charlie Chaplin and Gloria Swanson put this neighborhood on the map before Hollywood, CA was born. Also adding to Uptown’s notoriety was its association with such gangsters as Al Capone and John Dillinger, and the infamous Green Mill Tap, on Broadway at Lawrence Avenue.
Uptown Real Estate
In addition to the many shops and restaurants, residents of Uptown can enjoy recreation at local parks and on Lake Michigan. Uptown is home to Montrose Beach and Foster Beach, both of which are open to the public. The Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club is located in nearby Montrose Harbor. Local parks include Lincoln Park, Wilson Skatepark, Clarendon Park, and Margate Park.
Commuters can travel to Downtown Chicago and The Loop in less than 30 minutes. Catch the Red Line L at either Lawrence or Wilson Avenues. CTA Sheridan Avenue Bus #151 travels to Michigan Avenue.
Enter Lake Shore Drive at Wilson Avenue for a breathtaking ride right along Lake Michigan, and arrive at the John Hancock Building, the Drake Hotel, Bloomingdale’s, the famous Chicago Water Tower, and Water Tower Place in about 20 minutes (longer during morning and afternoon rush).
