About Evanston IL

Incorporated in 1863 and named after John Evans, Evanston, Illinois is located just north of Chicago and is diverse in many ways, much to the delight of both visitors and residents.  The City of Evanston is the first suburb north of Chicago and offers a beautiful shoreline along Lake Michigan, a considerable portion of which was reclaimed from the bottom of the lake in the early 1960’s, to expand the Northwestern University campus.  Not only does Evanston offer a variety of excellent higher educational opportunities, it offers a successful primary and secondary public school system in neighborhoods where Evanston homes for sale offer the conveniences and amenities your family is looking for.

The Evanston-Skokie Community Consolidated School District 65 serves all of Evanston and provides primary education from pre-K through 8.  With ten elementary schools through grade 5, three middle schools through grades 6-8, two magnet schools grades K-8, and three special schools, the district enrollment has surpassed 6,600 students. All of Evanston is within the boundaries of Evanston Township High School District 202.  

Recreation

In the spring, most of the beaches along Lake Michigan offer sailing lessons for those who wish to learn at a minimal cost.  The summer months are great for bringing a towel and an umbrella to enjoy the warm sand and refreshing water.  Next to the beaches is a park area where you can set up a picnic or a barbeque for a day of fun in the sun.

During the fall, the weather cools down some, but the activities do not. There are local music and cultural events which take place.  A light breeze accentuates the cool fall nights. You can enjoy local sights and sounds of Evanston in the fall, as many of the businesses and arts hold free activities.  But during the winter, the beaches are usually quiet and the lake freezes over.  Thus, the lake becomes a serene winter landscape where the crunch of the frozen lake ice in the waves and the quiet wind cut through silence; it is very calming and settling.
