Chicago Suburbs - Carol Stream

About Carol Stream

Located in DuPage County, about 34 miles west of Downtown Chicago, Carol Stream, IL offers its residents a commute to Downtown Chicago and The Loop via the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway, Route 290, and the Eisenhower Expressway.  O’Hare International Airport is just 20 miles away and the METRA Commuter Rail Service also serves the area.

In the late 1950s, developer Jay Stream envisioned a village that was made up of a mix of residential homes and light industrial businesses to help offset the tax burden for homeowners. In 1959, the Village was incorporated and named after his 14-year-old daughter, Carol Stream, who had recently been involved in a serious automobile accident. (The Village of Carol Stream remains the only Illinois community named after a living person.)  Fortunately, Carol recovered from the accident and has been able to see the village named after her and watch it grow and prosper. Carol Stream now resides in Arizona but continues to visit her namesake.

Consistent with Jay Stream’s original vision, the Village of Carol Stream has continued to grow and prosper with a steady influx of industry to the Village and residential expansion - just as he had envisioned it should.  The east and southeastern portions of the Village have developed into the economic base and the central and western portions of the Village comprised primarily residential housing.  Along with nearly 1,000 businesses and industries, Carol Stream homes for sale offer over 15,000 dwelling units with a population of 43,730 as of the 2000 census.  The Village of Carol Stream, IL is a very enjoyable community in which to live.  In addition, Carol Stream residents enjoy no municipal property tax!

The Village of Carol Stream includes modern schools.  Seven individual school districts serve the residents of Carol Stream.  Each of these districts is governed by members of an elected School Board and the funding for area schools comes from revenue generated by a separate local property tax.

Amenities

Other advantages of living in the area include a large park district with state of the art facilities, a modern library and several churches of varying denominations.  Among the popular attractions in the Village is the Illinois Prairie Path which offers 61 miles of hiking, biking, equestrian and nature paths.  This is a Path designed for the love of the outdoors and draws athletes of all walks of life to its trails.

For golf enthusiasts, there are actually 46 golf courses in DuPage County, to give you plenty of diversity to aide in improving your stroke.  Coyote Crossing  is a unique, professionally designed 18-hole mini-golf course, Klein Creek Golf Club , known as an "affordable public course with private club amenities", Chicagoland Golf and Golf Digest have identified Klein Creek as one of the premier public courses in the area.

The Carol Stream Park District  has 36 parks and playgrounds ranging in size from 1/4 to 74 acres. Additionally, there is an indoor pool, an outdoor water park, two recreation centers, a skate park, two gymnasiums, and a mini-golf course, and kids will certainly want to visit Kids World, a 16,000 square foot play complex.

Want to know where you can find even more fun?  The park district offers hundreds of activities and recreations as well as performing arts programs each year.  Sports enthusiasts can play in one of the many sports leagues which include football, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball and swimming.

The goal of the Village of Carol Stream, the Carol Stream Chamber of Commerce and the Carol Stream Convention and Visitors Bureau is to continue to work to carry out Jay Stream's vision.  As such, the Village of Carol Stream homes for sale offer an enjoyable place to work and raise a family.
