In the late 1950s, developer Jay Stream envisioned a village that was made up of a mix of residential homes and light industrial businesses to help offset the tax burden for homeowners. In 1959, the Village was incorporated and named after his 14-year-old daughter, Carol Stream, who had recently been involved in a serious automobile accident. (The Village of Carol Stream remains the only Illinois community named after a living person.) Fortunately, Carol recovered from the accident and has been able to see the village named after her and watch it grow and prosper. Carol Stream now resides in Arizona but continues to visit her namesake.
Consistent with Jay Stream’s original vision, the Village of Carol Stream has continued to grow and prosper with a steady influx of industry to the Village and residential expansion - just as he had envisioned it should. The east and southeastern portions of the Village have developed into the economic base and the central and western portions of the Village comprised primarily residential housing. Along with nearly 1,000 businesses and industries, Carol Stream homes for sale offer over 15,000 dwelling units with a population of 43,730 as of the 2000 census.
